Gov. Nikki Haley came to Greenville Tech Charter High on Monday to sign into law a bill broadening the options of charter schools and their students and formalizing the passage of one of state Superintendent of Education Mick Zais’ signature issues.

“It is a great day in South Carolina,” Haley said, repeating her cheery mantra with Zais at her side. “And the reason it’s a great day is South Carolina will no longer be the victim of regulations and will no longer be the victim of closed-mindedness when it comes to education.”

Roger Meek, chairman of the Greenville County School Board, said district officials don’t know how many charter students may opt to participate in athletics at a regular district school. But he’s wary about the impact on schools that have to pay coaches to coach students they don’t get the funding for.“We’re still concerned about the cost of it and where the money’s coming from, because the charter schools get the money,” Meek said.He’s also concerned that charter school students could bump students who attend the regular school from a sports team.“I don’t want to displace any of the kids that are in the sports in the high school they are attending,” he said.“We all want – and me included – for all kids to have as many opportunities as possible, and that includes playing sports,” Meek said. “I’m sure we’ll just have to work it out as the situation arises.”Another school board member who attended Monday’s signing ceremony, Lynda Leventis-Wells, said she thinks the new law will benefit everyone.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

There will be sports physicals for all sports for the school year 2012-2013 on Friday, May 18th starting at 1:30 in rooms B2 and B4.

Dr. Starling and her staff will again provide our physicals for $20.00 per student. All current students and rising Freshmen can take advantage of this opportunity.

All necessary forms can be picked up from Coach Smith in B1 starting Monday May 14th, the more information filled out in advance the quicker we can process everything the day of the physicals.

Summer School

GMC Summer School will start on June 11 and end on July 16. The school will be open every Monday during that time, except for the week of July 4th. Students are free to stop by to use the GMC computer labs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Monday. The labs will not be open the rest of the week.

There will be a teacher on-site to answer math and science questions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a teacher to answer English, Spanish and Social Studies questions from Noon to 4 p.m. each Monday.

Available Classes

Each student can take up to two classes. The first class will cost $135 while the second will cost $100. Students may sign up on either May 31^st or June 1^st in the GMC front office. Payment for summer school is due at that time.

GMC Summer School classes are designed to be self-guided; the school makes no guarantees that on-site teachers will be able to answer any and all questions. Any additional costs that classes may require, specifically costs related to book or lab requirements, are the responsibility of the student and will not be provided by the school.

Volleyball Conditioning will begin on May 7th at Eastside Worship Center. Conditioning will be 4:00-5:30 on the 7, 8, 10, 14, 15, and 17th.  Varsity tryouts will be July 30th.  

All ladies interested must have a current physical to participate. Girls without current physicals will not be allowed to participate until they have done so.  There will be an informational meeting for all girls interested in trying out on Wednesday May 2nd.  Information regarding summer conditioning and camps will be given on May 21st.

Only 4 more days before the Drive One for Ur School event at George Coleman Ford. This Saturday–anytime between 9-2–come by George Coleman Ford in Travelers Rest to test drive a Ford vehicle. NO sales pitch, very little time!

What’s in it for you?

1) The opportunity to show your support of GMC and to help the school raise $6,000 in one day ($20 per test drive)
2) TWO service hours for participating in this!

What’s in it for us?

This is BY FAR the easiest fundraiser of the year…. IF our families participate! Our goal is to make $6,000 this Saturday.

Remember that Ford allows only one test drive per household. Must be 18 years old to participate. Please, please, please help us spread the word. Tell everyone you know to support us in this way. Post on Facebook and email your friends.
