Global Studies I

EXTRA CREDIT!!! Students have the opportunity to gain 10 points on their lowest test or project grade.  Students must submit 5 Clerihews based on 5 different people from the Middle Ages for 2 points per poem.  Click here to view an explanation of a Clerihew and examples written by Mr. Stone. Clerihews are due 5/16 and 5/17.

***AA for students who did not achieve mastery on the Empire Building essay will take place before school at 7:30 a.m. on 5/10, 5/11, and 5/14.  Odd students must resubmit on Monday, 5/14, and even students on Tuesday, 5/15.***

***Chapter 14 Retesting will take place on 5/9 and 5/10.  Students should study chapter 14 terms to prepare for the retest.***

CHAPTER 9 and CHAPTER 16 – Americas

Students will be working in class on a literacy packet that covers the history of the Americas. This packet includes critical thinking questions, primary sources, historical accounts, and geography skills.  This completed packet counts as the Final Exam grade for Global Studies I. Students may purchase their own printed copy in class for 25 cents.  Listed below are questions to be omitted:

  1. Chapter Summary reviews
  2. 9.1 (Poverty Point) – #5, 6
  3. 9.1 (Carbon Dating) – #1, 2
  4. 9.2 (Zapotec Urn) – #1 (stop at “and share”) and #2 (stop at “Discuss”)

TWITTER PROJECT UPDATE – Due to the craziness of Emily Jayne (click here to see a picture!) arriving on Monday, I completely forgot to upload a cover page example.  Add a cover page of your own design which includes the following: project title, class name, and your name.

4/30-5/4 – Mr. Stone will be on personal leave this week.  Students will be working in groups to play an empire expansion/maintenance board game, Conquest of the Empire, modeled on Roman history during the days after Marcus Aurelius’ death.  Students will be writing a 1-2 page, 5-paragraph essay during this week, due no later than 1:35 on May 4 in the appropriate class basket in B10.  Click here for the assignment handout.

1/9-1/12 – Students will be watching Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith in class as we study transitions in ancient Rome politics.  The film will serve as a primer for the following assignment:

  • Star Wars assignment
  • Star Wars rubric
  • Martin Winkler’s research is very helpful for comparing ancient Rome with the Galactic Empire.  If available at local libraries or on the internet, use those resources to better understand the parallels.
  • NB: Pay attention to the climate of fear created by Palpatine, especially after Anakin becomes Darth Vader.  This climate of fear was used by many Roman politican-generals to control politics and achieve their personal desires (e.g., Marius and Sulla).
