Charter School FAQ’s

What is a charter school?
A charter school is a public, nonprofit corporation forming a school which operates within a public school district. Charter schools are an avenue for parents, teachers and community members to create new and more flexible ways of educating students within the state’s public school system.

Charter schools offer students different learning opportunities and teachers the flexibility to be innovative, but with the responsibility to be held accountable. A charter school is governed by a board elected by parents and teachers. The school must be accountable, meeting all state standards and No Child Left Behind legislation as well as the guidelines in its charter.

How do I enroll my student in a charter school?
Parents must choose the Charter School that best fits their child’s needs and interests, and then contact the school directly for application procedures.

If a charter school has more applicants than available slots, an open lottery must be held to fill the spots.

Aren’t some charter schools impossible to get into unless you know someone who already attends?
Admission preferences may be given to younger siblings of currently enrolled students. Children of teachers and administrators at a charter school may also be given admission preferences at that school. If a school has more applicants than openings, the remaining openings are filled in an open lottery.

What are the residency requirements to attend a charter school?
Students must be a resident of Greenville County to attend a charter school in the Greenville County School District.

How much does it cost to attend a charter school?
There is no tuition charged since we are a public high school supported by state and local funding. We rely on private organizations for much of our funding.

Are the education approaches used by charter schools academically sound?
Many charter schools use modern teaching techniques that are nationally recognized as effective, constructive, and rewarding for students. Some charter schools in the United States have helped to pioneer innovative teaching methods.
