We at Greer Middle College realize that not all students learn at the same rate. With that in mind, we have implemented the Mastery Learning Program to help students achieve academic success. As part of this program, students are required to master material at 80% in order to move to the next level of competency, thus better preparing them for the next level of work. In order to help students achieve this goal, however, we have a set of protocols that support the student learning.
If, having completed the required preparatory work, the student takes a test on a unit of material and does not meet the 80% mastery goal, he/she is required to attend academic assistance after school where the teacher “re-teaches” the material and tries to help the student master what was missed the first time. Then the student has the opportunity to re-test on that material and indicate 80% mastery. If, at the end of a course, 80% mastery is not attained, students must repeat the course to earn credit.
The mastery learning program has proven to be very successful in making our students stronger, more confident learners. We feel this program is instrumental in helping us as we strive to meet the needs of all students.
